I've ever seen. Most professors I know, at least in science, work harder under far more pressure and for less pay than those in the private sector. After they work 10 to 15 years for a PhD, they get to be called post-docs and make half a private sector salary just so they can get a real jobs. And if they're lucky enough to get that, they have to teach, do research, get grants and make tenure. I suppose they could slack off a bit more at that point, but do you really think that's the personality of most people that achieve so much? They do it because they feel like they are making a difference and because contributing to public knowledge is the right thing to do.
The professors I know that are not in science work just as hard as an employee at a regular company, and they don't get much outside income. If they do, it's small and only to supplement their modest salary.
