however, research activities enhance their professional reputations and help them sell books, serve as consultants, where they really start raking in the dough. YOU KNOW THIS POINT: the salary a professor makes is just a foundation for what they can truly make outside the classroom. There are certain benefits afforded professors that simply don't exist in the private sector, such as sabbaticals, tenure, and of course, summer vacations!

Nobody forced professors along a certain career path...the compensation for their work should be well known. Like any example in a capitalistic society, the best make well above average compensation for their knowledge/expertise, the average ones make, well, average compensation. HOWEVER, many professors choose the profession because the DON'T HAVE to be subjected to the every day pressures associated with performance at a private business, and that is of GREAT allure to a large percentage of our population.
