I have no doubt FSU and Clemson would prefer the SEC

and I think this Big 12 smoke is more to try and give the SEC one last shot to bring both schools into the league, where they would be great fits. Neither school will be in the Big 12 unless the SEC passes.
But FSU can't wait forever on the SEC and they may view the opportunity to join a real football conference that could generate much more revenue as one they can't afford to pass on, even when including the weird geography and recent instability (which may be viewed as less of a big deal given the grant of media rights).
Getting only $15 million a year when every other comparable football program will be in the $25-30 million range could be too much to ignore.
