Then some of assist stats don't mean much, IMO.

Such as my example. Partly because it takes no great talent to toss to the open perimeter. But then over half the time the shot will miss meaning that the passer gets credit only on the off chance the catcher makes the shot.
More meaningful to me would be an assist on a cut to the basket, which does take some skill as a passer.
Also a guy who passes a lot will tend to have more assists than if he instead - shoots. And if he makes a good % then probably he's done as much or more for the team than - just passing.
So I've never thought much of stats as showing a lot. But I have seen a HUGE no. of games lost on a missed FT.
Still rest my case.
