It is way easier to stay ranked then it is to get ranked. Texas is an example of that. They have been starting in the top 15 in recent years, despite having a mediocre team. It takes them quite a few losses to completely drop out of the polls, and they can weather losses better than an unranked team. Unranked teams the caliber of Texas, with similar win/loss totals have trouble moving into the top 25, but UT has much less trouble staying in.
