Pollard doesn't appear to be a kid who wants or enjoys the "spotlight". As one reporter said at the McDonald's game practices, Pollard doesn't have that "Alpha Dog" mentality. He doesn't seem to have the NEED to be "The Man".
What appears to appeal to him most is who can help him make it to and succeed on the next level. He doesn't need to be "The Man" to do that. Actually being "The Man" may hurt him. Pollard has some things he needs to work on in his game. It's hard to concentrate on specific areas of improvement if you're being asked to do EVERYTHING for your team. Being around more talent I think would help him hide his weaknesses while he works on them. Having more talent allows him the flexibility to only play to his strengths and NOT expose his weaknesses. So actually going to Bama and being "The Man" could hurt more than help. Especially since he's just not that type of personality.
