Larry Brown has had 13 or so different coaching jobs because he always wanted something new. He doesn't support your hypothesis as there isn't anywhere he would have stayed for more than 6 years.
Roy Williams stayed for 15 years, which is longer than the last three MU coaches combined. He didn't leave because KU was a stepping stone job.
