not that it can't be done but it isn't an option for many reasons such as:
1) Lowering the field creates more problems. The existing stands would not be steep enough for sight lines. Hence, lower the field would require rebuilding the stadium anyway, so don't lower it.
2) Lowering the field would most likely compromise the structural integrity of the existing stadium unless it was done extremely slow such that the stadium would be closed for years. This still doesn't solve problem 1.
3) The expense for lowering the field is astronomical and is still doesn't solve problem 1.
A new stadium will be built before the field is lowered.
