Both conferences are very similar.

I'd probably give the edge to the SEC.
Yeah, there's some really bad teams in the SEC...but there's always a lot of bad teams in the b12 every year too.
The main difference is that the bad teams in the SEC are always the same teams. The bad teams in the b12 change every now and then. The top of the SEC is better than the top of the b12. The bottom of the big12 is better than the bottom of the SEC.
As far as your last sentence, MU should have never been lower than third or forth overall in the b12. The fact that we were continually worse than that is because of a poor coaching era.
The b12 will not be a better basketball conference than the SEC from this point forward. Losing CU and NU helped the b12 a little bit, but adding TCU is a horrible addition to the conference. Losing MU and aTm also hurts the b12, while helping the SEC.
I don't think you give enough credit to teams like Georgia, Alabama, and Vandy.
