and the new uniforms, PLEASE!
Allow me to begin by saying I'm completely on board with the move to the SEC. Although I would have preferred to stay in a healthy Big 12 as a respected member of that conference, those hopes turned into a pie-in-the-sky dream long ago. Going to the SEC is the thing to do, and I couldn't be more pleased about how Deaton & Co. handled it.
The SEC is an exciting and storied conference, but we need to remember that none of its glory is Mizzou's glory. We haven't done anything close to what Bama has done in football, S. Carolina has done in baseball, or what Florida has done in football and basketball.
It embarasses me to see so many of our fans claiming and reveling in the glory of the SEC when we've yet to win a BCS bowl or make it to a Final Four or even win our first game as a member of the conference. Some of you might point out the drought that schools like Vandy have suffered and that's fair. However one key thing to remember is that Vandy isn't a new kid on the block. We are.
Are we a school on the rise? Absolutely. Do other schools blow us off at their own peril? I certainly think so.
But the fact of the matter is we have yet to make a significant footprint at the national level except for the occasional meltdown against Navy or Norfolk State. We have managed to move into one of the nicest neighborhoods in town, but the house is still furnished with lawn furniture and the neighbors are understandably looking at us with a wary eye. And they will continue to do so until we present them with some hardware the entire conference can be proud of. Hardware that goes far beyond a conference tournament or bowl win over N. Carolina.
So let's chill with the end-zone dances and bicep-kissing until we've done something we can truly be proud of. Show me, right?
