you have to include the NCAA tourney wins in 1945 and 1946 by Oklahoma A&M. The NIT was still the premier tournament of the day then, so it isn't when the NCAA tournament overtook the NIT. I think that is simply counting NCAA tourney wins, which means other than 1938 (the only year the NIT existed prior to the NCAA tourney) the NIT tourney champ isn't part of the discussion.
