UK has 1 pre-NCAA tourney Helms title... and also 1 post-NCAA Helms title (1954; which is unusual, usually the Helms just goes to the NCAA winner).
In 1954, and this provides historical background into why UK fans hate the NCAA, Kentucky was by far the best team in the country. So, after the regular season completes they establish a new rule that says that students who have already completed their undergraduate degree (and are working on their graduate degree) are unable to participate in the post-season tourney (shouldn't finishing early and going on to graduate work be encouraged... not when trying to stick it to Kentucky). It means 3 of Kentucky's starters were dis-allowed... Rupp said, screw 'em we're not going. The eventually NCAA tourney winner LaSalle had already lost handily to Kentucky during the regular season.
Nobody at Kentucky recognizes Helms title or cares about them really. UNC and Kansas are the only one who really do.
