The place had a unique smell . . .a combination of damp earth (the track was dirt), popcorn and pipe smoke (from the faculty and staff seating). It opened in 1929 as a "state of the art" facility. The court was laid in several pieces and was designed to be lifted off the dirt floor for indoor field events (shot, discus etc.) The lift system never really worked well and the court remained in place for almost the entire time from 1929 until it was removed sometime in the mid 1970s.
